Why We Do What We Do

By Troy Jones, PhD

At HSE Analytics, we are hooked on unlocking insights from data to help improve performance, solve problems and achieve business goals.

Where does this passion come from? I have seen the importance of driving performance improvement in all parts and stages of my life – as a student, then researcher and academic, and now as an entrepreneur serving clients big and small, and as a parent.

In 1994 I started my working life in Canada’s oil and gas industry, working as an apprentice millwright and as a welder’s helper on a pipeline construction crew in my hometown of Fort St. John in British Columbia as I made my way through university. This early experience gave me an appreciation for the essential role Canada’s resource industries play in our economy and the need to ensure responsible development.

After earning my PhD, I could see the huge value end-to-end analytics programs would deliver in managing and improving performance over time. I incorporated HSE Analytics in 2006 to help organizations, especially upstream oil and gas producers unlock the insights they needed in their data to improve their performance. Since then, I have had the honour to work closely with Canada’s largest upstream oil and gas producers in the design, build and maintenance of the data analytics program used by the national safety association to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. I also worked with a national industry association to design, build and maintain the data analytics system used by its operations department to measure the industry’s environmental and social impacts. Over 100,000 hours of HSE Analytics resource time was invested in these two projects alone.

Part of responsible development includes improving the environmental and social performance of resource companies and delivering on Canada’s climate targets. As a parent of two young children, I understand keenly the necessity of improving the performance and minimizing the impacts of Canada’s resource industries. I am excited about the opportunity to apply my professional experience to contribute to designing the programs necessary to deliver on Canada’s climate goals and protect the environment for future generations.

Having invested tens of thousands of hours working with national industry associations to lead the design, build and maintenance of the data analytics programs used to manage the industry’s impact, we have the experience and expertise necessary to help deliver on Canada’s climate targets through analytics.

For investors and proactive companies, we have the experience and expertise necessary to derive performance from objective authoritative data and peer reviewed methods. Our impartial, rigorous, and standardized process can be used to generate valid benchmarks and manage the risks investors face when otherwise attempting to compare the performance of operators as reported in stewardship reports. Performance as reported in stewardship reports is necessarily based on a company’s internal data and methods, data and methods which are not directly comparable and therefore incapable of supporting valid and reliable benchmarks.

For multi-stakeholder groups and associations, we have the experience and expertise necessary to manage the data analytics components of provincial and national programs responsible for delivering future performance targets.

We take pride in using analytics to help solve big challenges, like achieving our climate goals. We’re excited about delivering the insights that can improve the environmental and social impacts of Canada’s energy industry and ensure responsible development.
